Road Diary: 11.14.06- US Pro Golf Tour Championship - Las Vegas

Well after a bad showing at Q-school, I went to the US Pro Golf Tour Championship wanting to 1) finish the year off with a good showing and 2) finish in the top 60 on the money list to ensure that I would have playing privliges on the tour in 2007.

The Tour Championship was on a really good golf course called the Badlands, in NW Las Vegas, Nevada.  The course features a lot of lay-up holes surrounded by desert and rocks ready to capture any less than well struck shot.  I went into the tournament knowing that making the cut would most likely secure my position in the Top 60 on the money list.  So basically my goal was to make the cut and then will as much $$ as possible.  The Tournament had a $1 million dollar purse which is by far the biggest purse I've ever played for.  For comparision, the Cox Classic's purse was $650,000.   There was money to be made this week, which was plenty of motivation to try to shoot low.

The results of the tournament can be seen via http://tlt.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/tl6/event/tl624/contest/5/leaderboard.htm.   You can also read more about the tournament at http://www.usprogolftour.com/index2.php.   Let me continue.....

 Road Diary: Q-School??? What happened???

First of all, I guess the big question is what happened at Q-School?   Here's my assessment.....I really played better at Q-school than what my scores show.   I hit 70% of greens in regulation and 75% of fairways during the tournament....percentages that any pro golfer would love to have at Q-school.   I guess it comes down to putting.  I putted absolutely horrible the first two rounds.  I guess if I wanted to blame it on the fact that the putter I've been using for the last two years was stolen from my golf bag on my last American Airlines flight two weeks before Q-school, I could...but I'd just be making excuses.  As a sidenote American Airlines could quite possibly be the worst airlines in the business....no snacks, no help to get my putter, bad service....thank god they pay for at least a pilot to fly the plane.  No wonder there's not making any money. Ok, my side-rant is over.  After putting miserably, which has been the story of my whole year, I decided to scrap the method I changed to the year and just go with my own goofy-looking method that I perfected as a kid for the last two rounds.

 Road Diary: The Last Harrah!

Well, the year is winding down and I have two tournaments left until I have some big decisions to make.  First stage of PGA Tour Qualifying starts on Nov. 1st.  I'm going to Hollister, California again this year.   I've been playing really good golf over the past 5 months and am really looking forward to Q-School this year.  The last tournament I have is the US Pro Golf Tour Championship.  This is a $1 million dollar Tour championship and is the biggest purse I have ever played for.   I guess I have two options left this year:

1) make it through Q-school and get some status on the Nationwide or PGA Tour or

2) finish in the Top-60 on the US Pro Golf Tour money list for 2006 to acquire full status in 2007.

So basically I have two tournaments left to try to gain status on the Nationwide or PGA Tour or to earn enough money in the Tour Championship to be able to afford to continue in 2007.

As for the last two months, I've played three tournaments the US Pro Golf Tour.  The Tour has taken me to Albuquerque, NM, Colorado Springs, CO and Naples, Florida.  I finished T-37th, 46th, and 39th in the tournaments.  I've been so close to breaking through into the top 10 and contending in these tournaments and hopefully I can finally put it together in the last two.  Please check the US Pro Golf Tour website at www.usprogolftour.com  for more information on the Tour and to follow my progress at the tour championship.

Road Diary: 9.16.06 - Nebraska Swing

I am currently playing the third and last leg of what I like to call the Nebraska Swing.  The "Swing" starts with a 7 hour drive to Scottsbluff for the Scottsbluff Pro-Am, then takes me 4 hours to Cambridge for the Cambridge Pro-Am, and ends with a 3.5 hour drive to Columbus for the Nebraska Open.

The Scottsbluff Pro-Am ended last Sunday and I ended up shooting a three round total of 212 or 4-under par to finish 15th.  I struggled with my golf swing but was proud of how I grinded on every shot.  I shot 39 on the front nine of my second round, but hung in an shot a 32 on the back to keep myself in the tournament.

The Cambridge Pro-Am was on Tuesday and Cross Creek Golf Links.  It you ever are around Cambridge you simply must play Cross Creek.  It is one of the best courses in the state and is the longest 18 hole course in Nebraska.  Also, if you are around Cambridge you also have to play Heritage Hills in McCook and Wild Horse Golf Club in Gotherburg.  These 3 courses are as good as any three courses in Omaha.   I shot a 3 under 69 in the one-day tournament to finish Tied for 3rd.

 Road Diary: Update 9.5.06

Well, I've been slacking with the updates lately.  I've been playing quite a bit since the Cox Classic and I guess I need to get caught up.  Here's the update per tournament:

US Pro Golf Tour, Valleybrook Golf Club, Chatanooga, Tennessee

This was my first tournament after the Cox Classic.  I played pretty well during the first two rounds shooting a 68-71 to get ready for the last round.  I finished the tournament with a final round 70.  I ended up playing decent during the week and finished tied for 40th.

Oak Hills Pro-Am, Omaha, NE

This was a two day event in Omaha at the newly re-designed Oak Hills Country Club.  I struggled and shot two rounds of 72 to finish tied for 7th place

Road Diary: Cox Classic - Round 2

I new that I was going to have to do something special in round 2 to try to make the cut after my lackluster first round.  As I walked to the 10th tee to get ready to start the round I made sure to look around and say hello to some of my friends and family....I was so happy and felt very special to have such great people around to watch me play.   My drive found the fairway on #10 and left me only 200 yards to the 560 yard par 5.  I hit it on the green and made a solid birdie to start the round.  I parred 11 and then hit a great approach to 12 feet on the par 3 12th hole.  However, I three putted the green for bogey and I seemed to loose some steam.   To me, 3 putts are the worst thing in golf....nothing makes you more upset and takes away momentum after a 3 putt.

Road Diary: Cox Classic - Round 1

First of all, what an awesome event.  When I stepped up on the first tee and saw a bunch of family and friends, I was more excited than I have ever imagined.  The first round was kind of a blurr.  I started the round with more nerves than I had ever felt before.  I was very happy when my first drive found the fairway.  I believe that holes #1-3 is the toughest stretch at Champions.  However, when I arrived at my drive and tried to hit the next shot on the green, I was so excited and nervous that I don't think I even picked out a target.  It showed as I pulled my iron left into the thick rough.  I played a great shot to 12 feet but was unable to make the putt.  The second hole was much of the same.  I hit my drive into the rough and then had to punch out and try to make par.  My 12 foot par putt slid by the hole and I made another bogey.

 Road Diary: Update - 7.24.06 - South Dakota Open - 2nd Place

Well I just played my first event since the end of May in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  The Moccasin Creek Invitational was a three day event on the Dakotas Tour.  The course was very good and I felt that it was great preparation for the Cox Classic.

My tournament started very well with a 3 -under 69 in the first round.  I played very steady and was in good spririts, mostly due to thoughts of our family's new addition...Tyler Ryan Nietfeldt.  Ty was born last week and is quite the little peanut.  He gave me good motivation to do well.

Road Diary: Update 5.27.06 - TRUMP INVITATIONAL

I just have arrived back in the States from the Trump Million Dollar Invitational Tournament held on Canouan Island, in the Grenadines.  This 54 hole event was made for TV and will air on ESPN Sunday July 2, from 12:00 to 2:00 CDT on Wednesday July 12, from 1:30 - 3:30 CDT.

The tournament consisted of a 54 hole qualifier with the top 10 finishers competing for a chance to win $1 million dollars.

I did not make it to the top 10 due to some lacklaster play, but the island was beautiful and I had the opportunity to meet Donald Trump, Dennis Quaid, as well as play the final round with Adrian Young (drummer for No Doubt).  Please check out the pictures from this tournament under the Pictures tab.

 Road Diary: Update 5.4.06

After a week break, and some much needed time home, I am playing the second of two events sheduled in Late April- Early May.  Last week I played in Baton Rouge, LA on the Tight Lies Tour.  This week I am in Bradenton, Florida, playing the first event of the new US pro Golf Tour.

Since, I have taken a break from writing on the website, I'll just start with how I played last week in Baton Rouge.  I played pretty good in Baton Rouge and ended up tied for 30th.  The last round was cancelled due to rain and thunderstorms.  Overall, I was happy with my play and was looking forward to this week.

 Road Diary: Houston - 3.30.06 - 4.2.06

Well, after the final round collapse at Victoria, I was ready to get back at it this week.  The next tournament was played at Hearthstone Country Club in Houston, TX.  The course was an old type of country club that was built in a housing development.  This means, that their was plenty of out of bounds (in play on 15 holes) and water hazards.

The week started very well.  My good friend, Colin, flew down to caddie and see what life was like on the mini-tours, so I was ready to go and play well.  The first round was a battle...I didn't hit it well, but I grinded it out and shot par 71.

The second round was much of the same and I made a three foot birdie on the last hole to shoot 71 and make the cut on the number.

Road Diary: Victoria - Final rounds.

Sorry, to not update this sooner, but I was staying at some private housing that didn't allow me to access my laptop.

I was tied for 4th going into the weekend rounds.  The course was playing very tough and it was windy.  I played pretty good on Saturday but didn't make too many putts for birdie.

Road Diary: Victoria, Texas - 3.24.06

After a long writing break, I've decided to update this website for anyone interested.  I am in Victoria, Texas playing the Tight Lies Tour.  This is the first event on the Tight Lies Tour and I am doing very well so far.  I shot 72-71 over the last two days to make the cut and am currently in a tie for 4th place at 1 under par.

The tournament is being played at Victoria Country Club.  The course is very good and the greens are extremely firm...probably some of the firmest I've ever played.  I've played pretty good so far and have been very happy with both my physical and mental game.  I have made good decisions around the course and most importantly, I am just enjoying golf.

My putting has been great so far and this is very exciting.   I totally changed the way I putt two months ago from a very unorthodox grip to a conventional grip and set-up.  It has been very hard to change something I've done for 16 years, but it is turing out to be a great decision.   My putting has become so much more effortless and consistent.  At times it still feels a bit foreign but it is so much easier to make short putts now....and those are the money makers or losers for every professional.

I'm looking forward to the next two rounds and will update the website after each round.

Road Diary: 10.10.05 - Midland, TX - Nationwide Qualifier

Today was my final warm-up for Q-School.  I played the Nationwide Qualifier for the Midland/Odessa Permian Basin Classic.  The course I played was pretty good with fast greens.  The conditions were similiar to Nebraska....flat, windy, and seventy degrees.

I started off really slow with two bogeys and one birdie on the front nine.  I was a little upset with my both of the bogeys.  One was due to a three-putt from 20 feet and the other was from a horrible drive into a hazard.  I struggled with momentum but stayed positive.

Road Diary: Abilene, TX - Round 4

Let me see....I guess round four was sort of blah.  I played ok but didn't do anything spectacular.  The most exciting hole of the day was the par five 14th hole.  I had 260 to the green after my drive.  I decided to go for it from a dicey lie.  I was barely standing outside of a bunker and the ball was on an upslope.  I had to draw the shot 15 yards around a tree.  I hit it awesome into the front greenside bunker....which should have been an easy up and down for a birdie.  However, the ball plugged under the lip and I had to take and unplayable lie in the bunker, which always gives you a plugged lie.  I hit out and made an easy bogey.

The rest of the round was ok.  I made some putts and shot even par 72.  I wasn't too happy with my weekend finish but I was pretty happy with my attitude.  I ended up 7-under and tied for 27th.

Road Diary: Abilene, TX - Round 3 -

Today was an adventure.  The winds switched and were out of the north, probably due to Hurricane Rita.  I played very well and was 4 under through 15 holes.....and then came the train wreck.  The 16th hole was a 165 yard par 3 in which you have to carry the ball at least 150 yards over water.  The hole was downwind and was playing fairly easy.  Now 165 yards downwind is a stock 8 iron.  However, I didn't account for the two feet of sod I took before I hit the ball.  The ball flew like a wounded duck right into the pond and I ended up with an easy double bogey five.

Now, I was really still doing ok and was positive going into the 17th hole.  17 is a 450 yard par 4 playing directly into the wind with water right.  I pulled my tee shot left and had to chip out into the fairway and ended up making another bogey.

Now, really, I was still feeling good because 18 was a downwind par five that should be an easy birdie......However, I pulled my driver 15 yards left.  It should have been ok, but I guess I must have hit the cart path (as reflected by the road rash on my golf ball)....because after searching 350 yards from the tee I saw my ball two feet out of bounds.  I never in my wildest dreams, thought I could hit it out of bounds.  Anyway, that was a long 350 yard walk back to the tee.  My second drive was right down the middle and left me with a 7 iron to the green.  At this point I knew that I could still make par with a good shot.  I hit my seven iron 10 feet right of the flag, however, it didn't fly good, either because of the wind or because of the cart path ding on the ball (I didn't switch balls for some reason for my second drive).  Well, it ended up hitting the rocks 1 foot short of the green and went into the lake 50 yards to the right.  I took a drop and made a four footer for a double bogey 7.  At this point I wasn't feeling good.

So, I went from 12 under and moving up the leaderboard to 7 under really quick due to two bad swings.  That is pro golf in a nutshell.  Regardless, I kept a good attitude and am happy with how I handled myself during these trying holes.

My goal is to shoot a good number tomorrow and try to get into the top 10.  I'm playing well and am looking forward to tomorrow.

 Road Diary: 9.23.05 - Abilene,TX - Round 2

Today was round 2.  I played in the afternoon in a lot of wind.  Overall I hit the ball pretty good, hitting 16 of 18 greens.  My only two bogeys came on similar shots that sailed long right over the flag.  I thought I knocked both shots stiff, but I guess I'm hitting it longer these days.

I was happy with my finish today.  I birdied the 17th hole, which is a 450 yard hole with water in play on both the drive and approach and then eagled the final par five.  The last hole was playing only 520 yards and downwind.  I ended up hitting a driver and then a six iron to 10 feet and then sinking the putt.

Overall, I happy with my playing so far, but I need to put together a really good round if I'm going to make a charge at the leader.  Hopefully a good round comes tomorrow.

 Road Diary: Update 8.14.05

I'm home from Rapid City after a long tournament.  My second round started on Friday at 11:30 and ended on Saturday at 9:00.  We had many rain delays.  However, I ended up shooting a second round 68 that put me in the top ten going into the final round.

The weather on Saturday for the final round was kind of odd.  It was raining with a high of 55 degrees.  I put on my rain coat and went out and shot another 68 to finish 7 under for the tournament and tied for 7th place.  My putting was pretty solid again and if I could have been able to play the second round in the morning when it was perfect, I might have been able to get closer to winner.  Nevertheless, I finished 5 shots back from fellow Nebraskan winner Mike Plate.

Overall, I'm happy with the way I played and am looking forward for my next tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the Tight Lies Tour (www.tightliestour.net).

 Road Diary: Update 8.12.05

Today was interesting.  I started my round at 12:40 and finished at 7:30 and I still have 3.5 holes to play.  There was a lot of weather today.  It went from 75 degrees to 60 degrees this afternoon and its been raining cats and dogs.  I played pretty steady though.  I started with a chip in for eagle on the first hole and then parred the next 14 holes.  That puts me at 3 under par for the tournament.  I have a couple of easy holes left tomorrow when I finish the round, so hopefully I can get to five under and have a chance to catch the leader at 10 under during the final round.

Don't have much else to say about today.  Take care!

 Road Diary: Update 8.11.05

Update as of 8.11.05

Hello from Rapid City, South Dakota...just a 20 minute drive from Sturgis.

I shot a one under 70 in the first round of the Arrowhead Invitational today.  This should end up being a good round due to the windy weather and tough course conditions.  The fairways were very soft and the ball constantly picked up mud, making it very hard to hit shots close to the tucked-pins.  The pins were constantly 3-4 yards from the edges of the greens.   This is a good tournament and I am looking forward to tomorrow.

If you missed the first sentence, Sturgis is 20 minutes away and this golf tournament just happens to coincide with the Sturgis biker rally.  If you've never experienced Sturgis, I would definitely recommend coming at least once.  It is very hard to describe.  There are Harleys everywhere and the crowd is quite diverse.  Diverse in the sense that you have the classic bikers intertwined with the new age bikers.  A fun fact is that the average age of a Harley-Davidson rider is 49 and the median household income is $80,000.    This makes sense as these bikes can run from $20,000 to $40,000 depending on what modifications are made.   I would get one but I don't think there is a place for my clubs and shoes.

Nevertheless, Rapid City is a fun time this time of year and I'm looking forward to two more days of good golf and having some fun.

Hit them straight and long!! - Ryan

 Road Diary: The Golf Life

Well it's August 8th, 2005 and this website has been up for at least 6 months and I'm finally going to start using it a little.

First, I guess I'll update how golf has been going this year.   Let's see...January through June....was pretty bad.  I struggled with every aspect of my game and was not very happy with my performance.  The putter let me down and I just couldn't put it all together.  However, during the last two months, I've been putting in overtime and working hard on all aspects of my game.  I'm finally starting to play like I'm capable.  I put a new putter in the bag this week and it seemed like magic.  The putss started going in and my short game became a strength again...golf was fun.    I finished 6th this week in Yankton, SD and made my biggest check so far this year.  I'm looking forward to next week in Rapid City.

Now, I've been told that this website can be pretty awesome if used properly.  If you're reading this please sign up as a registered user.  This will allow me to send out updates and articles.  After you register, please use the forums and post some items.  Lets get some discussion going and I'll be sure to pipe in a bit too. I'm going to start adding content to make it better and I need your suggestions.

Finally, thanks for your support.
